The Hunt

It's amazing to me. People go their entire lives without realizing the most simple, obvious truth. The only way to properly slice tomatoes is with a bread knife.

Year: 2020
Director: Craig Zobel

Starring: Betty Gilpin, Hilary Swank, Ike Barinholtz, Wayne Duvall, Ethan Suplee, Emma Roberts, Christopher Berry, Sturgill Simpson, Kate Nowlin, Reed Birney

What is this about: Group of people find out they've been kid napped to be part of human hunt and the events of surviving and finding out what is going on starts. Some similarties with the movie Turkey Shoot (1982) wich I happened to see last fall, but happily enough differences too.

Content warnings: Violence
Best about it: Weirdly smart with several plot twists, not only hunting as I hought it would be
How did I felt: Suprised! I did'nt excpect this to be so good. I felt entertained.
Goodness: 4/5
Weirdness: 4/5

TV serie: Harlots

I only have a few rules, girls. No orgies, flagellation, or bestiality. Otherwise you are at liberty to entertain gentleman callers as you wish.

Beginning of this year has been really quiet with good movies, but I watched excellent tv serie Harlots from Yle Areena.

Directors: Coky Giedroyc,  Jill Robertson, China Moo-Young, Philippa Langdale, Robin Sheppard, Chloe Thomas, Debs Paterson
Writers: Moira Buffini, Alison Newman, Hallie Rubenhold, Jane English, Cat Jones, Jessica Ruston, Debbie O'Malley, Emer Kenny, Vivienne Harvey
Starring: Lesley Manville, Kate Fleetwood, Holli Dempsey, Eloise Smyth , Bronwyn James, Danny Sapani, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Ellie Heydon, Samantha Morton, Jessica Brown Findlay     Jessica Brown Findlay , Jordan A. Nash, Douggie McMeekin, Liv Tyler, Edward Hogg, Hugh Skinner, Lex Shrapnel, Jojo Macari

What is this about: Class society, poverty, rasism and gender inequality in 1800th century London. Main characters are form Wells family: a mother who has a brothel and her daughters who needs to earn their living.

Content warnings: Sexual assaul, violence
Best about it: Entertaining drama but made me think some serious topics how the world wasn't and isn't as good to everyone. Also some moral issues were presented: how awful things people are able to do when they want to save themselves.
How did I felt: Interested an entertained. Pinge watching this occasionally, very well done. Partly the show feels a bit too soap opera with all the gossiping but it doesn't take all tha attention and the the costumes, the characters, the plot and everything together works.
Goodness: 5/5
Weirdness: 2/5

Tenet

The rest is fate and I don't have it

Year: 2020
Director:
Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas
Writer: Christopher Nolan
Starring: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Kenneth Branagh

What is this about: Secret agent finds out time doesn't work the way we always thought when is he is recruited to work for project called Tenet and finds out objects can move backward through time.

Content warnings: Action kind of violence
Best about it: Smart and well made. I liked the start, but suprises ended too quickly. If you're action film lover you'll like this.
How did I felt: Dissapointed! Don't get me wrong, the movie was fine as a action movie, but it could have potential to be great sci-fi mystery or something more and that's what I kind of expected and didn't get. Also as some Nolans movies tend to be, this was too long and somehow main characters were not easy to identify with. I was big fan of Nolan's Inception (2010) and Memento (2000) so that propably affected my expectations.
Goodness: 3,5/5
Weirdness: 2/5

2021

Here's 12 good movies I've seen in 2021 that I didn't make a post about. Short introduction it is then, so that these can get more public awareness and also for me to remember these better.

 ID: A (2011)

Woman wakes up in a river and remembers nothing. She tries to solve what happened before. Super good and underrated mystery drama thriller. 4,5/5

The Invisible Man (2020)
Cesilia escapes her manipulative and abussive husband and feels that she is hunted by a man no-one sees. Realy nice mystery drama with horror and scifi elements. 5/5

MidSommar (2019)
Smart cult themed horror movie directed by Ari Aster. Ominous atmosphere from beginning 'till the end. 4/5

Fantastic Planet (1973)
Directed by René Laloux and written by Laloux and Roland Topor. This felt oddly very timely even it's made almost 50 years ago. This animated science fiction film is dystopian where humans are kept as animals (called Oms) by humanoids in technologically and spiritually advanced society. Some Oms are kept  as pets while others live in the nature and are periodically slaughtered to control their population. 4/5

Barking dogs never bite (2000)

This was special, because I went to the movies after a really long pandemia break. Movie itself was great too. South Korean  dark comedy directed by Bong Joon-ho was sort of slow and with only limited plottwists but enough to keep me interested. 4/5

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring/Bom yeoreum gaeul gyeoul geurigo bom (2003)

Minimalistic strong drama directed by Kim Ki-duk. Unique and slightely depressing but beautiful. 4/5

Naked Lunch (1991)

David Cronenbergs Naked Lunch is based on novel by William S. Burroughs. Really bizarre mix of crime, mystery and drama made with surrealistic touch. 4,5/5

Taipei Suicide Story

Short movie about hotel where desperate people come to commit suicide. Very warm and thoughtful film. 5/5

Hotel Artemis (2018)

Sort of an easy good mood crime movie, but with dystopian and action vibes. Slightly psychological but still easy to watch. 4/5

Hypnotic (2021)

Psychological trauma themed Netflix thriller, directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, written by Richard D'Ovidio and starring Kate Siegel, Jason O'Mara, and Dulé Hill. Very true to its genre and nothing wrong with it. 3,5/5

The Invisible Guest/ Contratiempo (2016)

Nice mystery drama thriller by Oriol Paulo. Adrian is accused of a murder that happened in the closed room and he has only few hours to find our what happened and how to defend.

Don't look up (2021)

One of the most talked movies of the year. Comet is about to destroy planet Earth and movie directed by Adam McKay and strred by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence is filled with parables of how covid and/or climat change are considered amoung conspiracy theorists, media and politics. Nice scifi drama comedy, but partly painful to watch as it's so accurate. 4,5/5
